PURPOSE:To obtain a thin film type magnetic recording medium having high coercive force and having magnetically isotropy in face by forming a non-magnetic metal on a base body in such a way that said metal is incorporated over the entire film thickness in the magnetic film formed by approximately vertical vapor deposition of a ferromagnetic metal and that the concn. distribution thereof increases toward the base body side. CONSTITUTION:A non-magnetic metal such as Bi, Sb, Ga, Si, Ge and the alloy, intermetallic compd., etc. thereof from a vapor deposition source 7 for said metal and Co, Ni, Fe or the alloy thereof from a vapor deposition source 8 for said metal are deposited by evaporation on a base 4 consisting of a polyimide film, etc. by providing shutters 10, 10 and a shielding plate 9 to shield the vapor flow of the sources 7 and 8 from each other while said base is fed from a supply reel 3 to a take-up reel 6 along a metallic can 3 in the vacuum chamber 2 of a vapor deposition device 1. The ferromagnetic layer having the concn. gradient of the metal 7 increasing toward the base body side is first formed by depositing the layer 7 by evaporation in the above-mentioned way. As a result the vertically vapor deposited thin film type magnetic recording medium having high coercive force and high output is thus obtd.
