The invention relates to a device for welding tubes in place, with a pistol-like basic body to which welding-equipment components can be attached, a centring spindle which is mounted in the basic body and can be inserted into the tube to be welded in place and can be secured therein, and an axially displaceable arbor acting on the actuating mechanism for a centring means in the centring spindle and loaded by a tension spring. Known devices of this type are awkward to manipulate, do not permit sufficiently accurate centring of the basic body and can only be used within an exceptionally narrow tolerance range of deviations of the desired inside diameter of the tube to be welded in place. According to the invention, a simple-to-manipulate and neatly centring apparatus compensating for tolerances on the inside diameter of the tube is created in which the centring spindle has a longitudinal section radially expandable with the arbor as well as a centring taper supporting the basic body at the tube end, and in which the piston grip is constructionally combined with the actuating mechanism and forms a force abutment during the random deformation of the tension spring.
