PURPOSE:To extract highly accurately the left-hand radical and right-hand radical of a character and to recognize the character by dividing a character pattern area to be recognized into sub-pattern areas parallel with respective direction codes and calculating a stroke feature variable in each direction code. CONSTITUTION:A character pattern signal 9 to be recognized is binary-coded as white and black parts by a binary-coding part 10 and stored in a memory part 11 as a character parttern. A direction code application part 12 reads out the character pattern areas in the memory part 11 successively in the horizontal direction, and when the remark point of the character pattern is a part of a black point string more than reference length N for determining each direction diameter and direction code, applies the corresponding direction code. A stroke extracting part 13 applies a stroke No. of the corresponding point. An area division part 14 divides the character pattern area into sub-pattern areas in parallel with the direction codes. Feature variable calculating parts 15-18 calculate the feature variables of strokes in respective direction codes by using the area Nos. including respective strokes and a recognition part 19 compares the calculated values with a recognition dictionary on the basis of the feature value in each pattern area to recognize the character.
