PURPOSE:To readily couple optical fibers with good accuracy by attaching flanges to the end of sleeves in which the optical fibers are fixed by means of adhesive agents and coating adhesive agents serving also as matching agents between the flanges then aligning the optical axes and allowing the adhesive agents to set. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 1 coated with adhesive agents 6 is inserted and fixed in a sleeve 2 provided with a flange 4 at its end. The end of its core 1b is aligned to the flange front face 4a. Next, adhesive agents 7 are coated to the flange front faces 4a of the both sleeves 2 to be connected and the both faces are affixed together. The adhesive agents 7 which are capable of serving also as matching agents, are transparent and have a refractive index equal to that of the cores 1b are used. Next, during the time until the adhesives 7 set, the position of one flange is slided while the flanges 4 are held affixed, by using, e.g., a manipulator to control the flanges to the point where the coupling efficiency of the both optical fibers 1 is maximum, thence the flanges are coupled and fixed. |
