NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [X is OH, NHR<2> (R<2> is H, 1-10C alkyl, etc.) or CO2R<3> (R<3> is 1-10C alkyl); R<1> is 2-15C acyl which may contain a halogen]. EXAMPLE:The compound expressed by formula II. USE:A synthetic intermediate for remedies against keratitis or cephalitis due to herpes viruses. PREPARATION:A dehydrogenating agent, e.g. NaH, is dropped and reacted with a suspended solution consisting of a compound expressed by formula III, e.g. 3',5'-di-O-benzoyladenosine, and a solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, while stirring the suspended solution, and the resultant reaction mixture is reacted with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid anhydride in the presence of an organic base, e.g. 4- dimethylaminopyridine, to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
