PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound economically, by halogenating 4-tert- alkyl alkylbenzene, etc., and contacting the resultant 2,6-dihalogenated compound witn an alkylbenzene, etc. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The compound of formula I or formula II (R1 is alkyl or alkenyl; R2 is tert-alkyl; X1 is halogen) is halogenated with a halogen gas such as chlorine or bromine, etc. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to effect the selective halogenation of the 2- and 6-positions. the obtained compound of formula III or formula IV (X2 is halogen) is made to contact with an alkylbenzene, alkenylbenzene, 2-haloalkylbenzene or 2-haloalkenylbenzene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to effect the trans- alkylationof the group R2. The objective compound of formula V can be produced easily and economically, in high purity and extremely high yield.
