PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound in high yield, by oxidizing diisopropylbenzene with molecular oxygen in the presence of an alkaline aqueous solution until the reaction system reaches specific state, and reducing the product with an aqueous solution of a sulfite in a water-insoluble solvent in the absence of said aqueous solution. CONSTITUTION:Diisopropylbenzene is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of an lakaline aqueous solution until the hydroxyperoxide concentration in the oily phase reaches >=110wt% in terms of diisopropylbenzene monohydroperoxide. The above aqueous solution is separated from the obtained binary liquid phase oxidation reaction mixture, and the oxidation reaction product in the oily phase is dissolved in a water-insoluble solvent. The solution is made to contact with an aqueous solution of a sulfite under stirring to reduce the above product. The aqueous phase is separated from the obtained binary liquid phase reduction reaction mixture, and the objective di(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)benzene useful as an intermediate of crosslinking agent is separated from the oily phase by a relatively simple oprocedure, in high purity and yeild.
