A fireproofing compsn. comprises an aqs. soln. of a water-soluble inorganic salt (I) as flame retardant and a polyphosphonic ester acid or salt as surfactant to reduce surface tension. The surfactant is pref. used in an amt. of 0.25-3; esp. 0.3-1%, based on vol. of the compsn. and is pref. a K salt of a polyphosphonic ester (complex) organic salt. The compsn. is used for flameproofing porous materials esp. wood. Wood impregnated with the compsn. satisfies the requirements of BS476 class O.
