PURPOSE:To aim at stabilizing the combustion of an engine upon low load operation, by injecting a jet stream into a combustion chamber from in an auxiliary intake-air passage upon low load operation to increase the strength of swirl within the combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION:A high vacuum is effected in a first intake port 30 since an intake control valve 30 is closed during intake stroke upon low load operation of an engine. Air in an intake-air manifold 12 is sucked through an auxiliary intake passage, and is injected, as a strong jet stream as indicated by the arrow J, into a combustion chamber 14 through a gap formed by a first intake port 26 which is opened. The jet stream J is merged into a swirl which is effected in the combustion chamber under action of a herical port 22, so that the strength of the swirl is increased. |
