For printing forms (F) by means of a word-processing station, each form (F) is scanned by a scanner (A) to distinguish between its areas to be printed (FE1) and its areas which are not to be printed (FE2). On the basis of the scanning signals (AS) a mask is produced which is shown on a display unit (AE). After the mask has been filled in on the display unit (AE) by means of characters entered via a keyboard (T), the form (F) is printed with these characters, the printout of the mask itself being blocked. For the reliable recording of horizontal lines on the form (4), the latter is scanned in the line direction not in straight lines but along undulating scanning lines (A2). <IMAGE>
