In a process for producing a contact wire from a metal of high conductivity, with a core insert made of a metal of high tensile strength, a high-strength steel wire plated with copper or a copper alloy and a wire consisting of copper or of a copper alloy are brought together in a continuous operation and are jointly reduced in cross-section by at least 10% at a temperature of at least 900 DEG C, and the wires are at the same time combined to form one wire.
