The apparatus has a removal device 13 with a magazine 28 for retaining rings 11, a transfer device 14 and an assembly device 15. In the removal device, a separating slide 46 pushes the lowermost retaining ring 11 out of the magazine 28 into a holding device 29, which can be displaced out of a retracted position into an extended position in which the retaining ring is coaxial to an expanding spigot 31 of the transfer device 14 and is taken up and expanded by the expanding spigot. The expanded retaining ring is then transferred in the expanded condition to a receiving sleeve provided in the assembly device 15. The assembly device 15 is then pushed with its receiving sleeve onto a shaft until it butts against a gear wheel 36 to be secured on the shaft 35.
