PURPOSE:To attain reading of a thick original by supporting fixedly the original to a transparent support plate and using an unmagnification multi-element type scanning reading element so as to read the original thereby precluding the possibility of damage to the original. CONSTITUTION:Lots of split electrodes are arranged to a photoelectric conversion element such as CdS or amorphous silicon in the unmagnification multi-element type scanning reading element 16 in an original scanning reading head 15, stores directly a change in the inter-electrode resistance based on the irradiation of light image or a current based on the resistance change to a capacitor and reads it as an electric signal sequentially. As a lens array type unmagnification image projection optical element 17, a lens array where lots of rod lenses with 1mm. of diameter are arranged is used. An original to be scanned is placed on an original placing glass plate 25 and fixed by an original retaining plate 26. The reading and scanning of the original is conducted by moving an original scanning reading head 15 in a prescribed speed along a guide rail 28. Through the constitution above, the original is not damaged even with the reader using the unmagnification multi-element type scanning reading element and the reading and scanning of a thick original is attained and the reader is made compact in size.
