The object of the invention is to improve the efficiency of thermocouples and Peltier elements. The solution proposed consists in designing a thermal shank from two unequally annealed parts in such a way that said two parts are connected by a multiplicity of electrically and thermally parallel constriction resistors. The mean diameter of said constriction resistors is smaller than the diffusion length or the mean free path of the charge carriers of the thermal shank material used. As a consequence of the very high field strengths, combined with path length effects, thermal shanks of the invention make it possible to fabricate thermal generators and Peltier coolers with an increased efficiency. Figure 1 of the description is a typical illustration of the thermoelectric configuration having constriction resistors 3. <IMAGE>
