Acetylene can advantageously be polymerised if the catalyst employed is a nickel compound which can be prepared by reacting a nickel(0) compound, or a compound which can be converted into a nickel(0) compound in situ, with compounds of the formula (I) or (II) <IMAGE> in which R<1>, R<2> and R<3>, independently of one another, are optionally halogen-, hydroxyl-, C1-C20-alkoxy- or C6-C12-aryloxy-substituted C1-C20-alkyl, C6-C12-aryl or C3-C8-cycloalkyl, furthermore C6-C12-aryl-C1-C20-alkyl, C1-C20-alkyl-C6-C12-aryl, C1-C20-alkyl-C3-C8-cycloalkyl, C6-C12-aryl-C3-C8-cycloalkyl, C2-C6-alkenyl, C6-C12-aryl-C2-C6-alkenyl, di-C1-C4- alkylamino, optionally substituted phenoxy or alkoxy, O, NR<9> or <IMAGE> n is zero or one, R<4>, R<5>, R<6>, R<7> and R<8>, independently of one another, are optionally halogen-, hydroxyl-, C1-C20-alkoxy- or C6-C12-aryloxy-substituted C1-C20-alkyl, C6-C12-aryl, C2-C30-alkenyl or C3-C8- cycloalkyl, furthermore C6-C12-aryl-C1-C20-alkyl, C1-C20-alkyl-C6-C12 -aryl, halogen, hydroxyl, C1-C20-alkoxy or C6-C12-aryloxy, R<7> is hydrogen, R<8> is hydrogen or sulphonate, and R<9>, R<10> and R<11>, independently of one another, are hydrogen, nitrophenyl, silyl, halogen, cyano or R<1>.
