In order to control the application of casting powder to the bath surface in the mould of a continuous casting plant, a transmitting device is provided which emits light of a predetermined intensity, directed onto the bath surface. A receiving device receives the light reflected at the bath surface and converts the received light into an electrical signal. An intensity-testing circuit is connected to the output of the receiving device, and delivers a signal which is dependent on the intensity of the received light and is used for the control of the casting powder delivery. The transmitting device and the receiving device are preferably components of an electro-optical distance-measuring device used for the measurement of the bath level in the mould. <IMAGE>
