NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (X is F or Cl; R is 1-10C alkyl or alkoxyl; n is 1 or 2). EXAMPLE:A 4-halogenothiophenyl 4-substituted benzoate. USE:A liquid crystal composition, having positive dielectric anisotropy and the anisotropy (DELTAepsilon) as low as about 1.5, a low driving voltage, and improved compatibility with another liquid crystal compound, and stable to heat, light, etc. PREPARATION:Benzoic acid expressed by formula II is reacted thionyl chloride to give a carboxylic acid chloride, which is then reacted with a 4-halogenothiophenol and pyridine to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
