PURPOSE:To reduce the increment of numbers of switch circuits as well as exclusive lines for transmission of mode information, by using a digital control signal read out through a common bus to switch the record and reproduction equalizer characteristics through digital processing. CONSTITUTION:A mode is designated to a microcomputer 28, and the computer 28 initializes a level detector 38, etc. Then the computer 28 decides whether a magnetic tape 22 is driven at a standard speed and whether a magnetic head 21 is equal to a ferrite head. When a standard speed is decided together with the use of a ferrite head, data PBEQ(A) and RECEQ(A) stored previously in a memory 39 are read out through a common bus 29 and applied to a reproduction equalizer circuit 35 and a record equalizer circuit 42 respectively. These equalizer circuits are set at optimum reproduction and record equalizer characteristics in a standard mode with a VTR using a ferrite head.
