NEW MATERIAL:Compounds of formula I , wherein R1 is H, a 1-4C alkyl, (un) substituted phenyl; R2 is a residue of phenylenediamines; R3 is H, methyl, methoxy, halogen; Y is Cl2, (OCH3)2, NH. USE:Red azo pigments having excellent coloring power, resistance to light, solvents, heat and water, etc. PREPARATION:A compd. of formula II obtd. by coupling 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid with a diazonium compd. of 4-aminophthalimide is reacted with a compd. of formula III. Alternatively, a compd. of formula IV is reacted with a compd. of formula V, or a diazonium compd. of 3- or 4-phthalimide (derivative) is coupled with a compd. of formula VI.
