NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is 1-20C alkyl and alkoxyl); R* is optically active group containing asymmetric carbon atom; m and n are 1 or 2). USE:One component in liquid crystal compositions, particularly a strongly dielectric liquid crystal compound having improved response to image display, improved light resistance and a wide temperature range (MR) exhibiting strong dielectric property even by itself but capable of exhibiting a wide MR near room temperature by mixing with another strongly dielectric liquid crystal compound. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II as a raw material is converted into an acid chloride expressed by formula III, which is then reacted with an optically active alcohol expressed by the formula ROH to produce a compound expressed by formula IV. The resultant compound expressed by formula IV. The resultant compound expressed by formula IV is then oxidized to give a compound expressed by formula V, which is converted into an acid chloride expressed by formula VI, and finally reacted with a compound expressed by formula VI to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I .
