Heptanoic acid derivatives represented by the general formula:

wherein R<3> is an acyloxy group, a halogen atom or a hydrogen atom are manufactured by reacting a cyclo-octene derivative represented by the general formula:

wherein Y is -R<1>, - COR<1> or - SiR<2>3, R<1> being an alkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group and R<2> being an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms, with a compound represented by the general formula:

wherein R<3> is as defined above and X<1> and X<2> are halogen atoms. The derivatives are useful as intermediates for the production of prostaglandins.
