<p>S-Carboxymethylcysteine <FORM:1071807/C2/1> is prepared by alkylating cysteine with an alkali metal monochloroacetate, in the presence of a proton acceptor, preferably NaOH; the reaction is carried out in aqueous solution at about 5 DEG C., under inert gas (nitrogen) and when complete the product is precipitated by acidifying the reaction mixture and recrystallized from alkaline solution by addition of acid. The product is afterwards converted to its sodium salt in aqueous solution, for use in a pharmaceutical composition (see Divisions A5-A6).ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions for topical application comprise a water-in-oil emulsion of a solution of a non-toxic, water-soluble salt of S-carboxymethyl cysteine in an aqueous phase uniformly dispersed throughout a non-toxic topically applicable unguent lipid carrier as the non-aqueous phase. The composition preferably includes one or more surface active agents, such as polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, alkali metal lauryl sulphonates, and triethanolamine stearate. The preferred soluble salts are those of alkali metals or ammonium organic bases such as mono-or tri-ethanolamine, or basic aminoacids such as lysine or arginine. The lipid medium may contain one or more of glyceryl mono-stearate or-palmitate, lanolin or hydrogenated lanolin, perhydrosqualene, polyethylene glycols, propylene glycol stearate, hydrogenated oils and mixed esters of glycerol and polyoxyethylene glycol obtained by subjecting oils such as almond p oil to alcoholysis in the presence of polyoxyethylene glycols, cholesterol or its palmitate, sorbital, preservatives, (benzalkonium chloride or sorbic acid), and suitable coloring agents. Other active ingredients may be present, such as thyroxin and vitamin A. The compositions are useful for treating fragility of human nails.</p> |
