PURPOSE:To obtain a branch unit or a demultiplexer for milimeter and optical waves which has structure to be simply produced by photomasking technique and superior characteristics by coupling directly between plate-like lines arranged on the same plane in parallel by a plate-like transmission line consisting of the same material as said lines. CONSTITUTION:An optical path 20 is constituted by etching on the upper surface of a glass substrate 10 having a section and diffusing titanium or germanium and two lines 21, 22 are coupled by a transmission line 23 having prescribed width. The line 21 has an input port 21a and an output port 21b and the line 22 has a reflecting port 22a and an output port 22b. If light L is applied from the input port 21a as shown in fig. (a) when the optical device is used as a branchin unit, branched light L/2 having a half level of the input light L is taken out from the two output ports 21b, 22b respectively. If light having two wave length lambda1, lambda2 is applied from the input port 21a as shwon in fig. (b) when the optical device is used as a demultiplexer, light with the wave length lambda1 and light with the wave length lambda2 are taken out from the two output ports 21b, 22b respectively. |
