Lifting tongs comprise a load-engaging shoe 27 mounted on a slide 24 which is manuallyadjustable along a frame 11 supporting a shoe 30 to engage a load such as a coil C, and on raising a lever 38, pivoted to brackets 15 on the frame 11, by means such as a crane hook 35 engaging a clevis 53 pivoted to the lever at 52, the shoes are brought together to grip the load by means of a pawl 44 pivoted at 43 to the lever and engaging ratchet teeth 32 on the slide 24. Spring counterbalances 58 are pivoted between the brackets 15 and the clevis to maintain the tongs substantially level whether loaded or unloaded. On depositing the load, an automatic latch 49 engages a keeper 18 on the frame 11 for easy removal of the tongs from the load. Handles 17, 28, 46 are provided for manual adjustment of the tongs. |
