PURPOSE:To secure identification of a defect picture element position and to reduce erroneous compensation by giving a characteristic to an output signal of defect picture element by physically or chemically processing for the defect picture element in which the output signal out of the prescribed range is detected. CONSTITUTION:Assuming that output signals containing signals A, B, and C which are slipped away remarkably in level from the level of an image signal X are extracted, picture elements outputting respectively signals A, B, and C decide that they are defect picture elements. Inspite of the types of the defect picture elements A, B and C, all are worked into white defectives A1, B1 and C whose output levels exceed a slice level SL1 to attain distinction from proper picture elements. Therefore, in case of performing image pickup using the processed solid-state image pickup elements, the picture elements exceeding the slice level SL1 for the output signals are compensated by substituting said picture elements for peripheral picture elements, for instance, the picture element image output signals two bits before the picture elements.
