PURPOSE:In using an alkylphenol as a raw material, subjecting it to a sulfurization-metal addition reaction, followed by carbonation, to obtain the titled detergent useful for lubricant or fuel oil without using expensive salicylate, by carrying out distillation process of water and bihydric alcohol under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:(A) A phenol is blended with (B) a bihydric alcohol, (C) sulfur, (D) an alkaline earth metal, and, if necessary, (E) water in such a way that an amount of the component C is preferably 0.001-2.5g equivalents/g equivalent (based on the component D), and an amount of the component D is 0.90-0.01 equivalent/g equivalent (based on the component A) to give a starting raw material mixture, which is subjected to sulfurization-metal addition reaction in the presence of 0.01-10g equivalents/g equivalent (based on the component D). Water and excess component B are distilled away from the reaction system in such a way that a ratio of the component B/reagent D is <=1.5mol/g equivalent, and the resultant substance is treated with carbon dioxide. |
