A selvedge-forming apparatus for weaving machines comprises a movable shed-forming member(5) with yarn eyelets(8) for moving selvedge warps(7) up and down between two legs(21), which respectively carry the light emitter and receiver elements of a photocell(22). The light beam is interrupted by the passing selvedge warps, and a counter records the number of interruptions for comparison with a reference number as an indication of abnormal shedding frequency. Breakage or excessive tension redn. of selvedge warps is sensed by simple apparatus of max. compactness.
