PURPOSE:To allow detection of an index word and to generate index automatically together with sentence by only once input of sentence by inserting one or plural identification codes which are not printed out after and before an index word. CONSTITUTION:When a sentence is inputted from a sentence input means 1, an operator judges whether or not a word is an index if it is not the end of the sentence. If it is an index, an operator inserts one or plural non-printed identification codes through an inserting means 2. Then the index word concerned is inputted and stored in a memory means 3. Moreover an identification code is inserted by the inserting means 2. As a result, an index word is stored in such a way that it is held by identification codes. At the end of originals, pages are indexed by an indexing means 4, and if it is an index word, it is extracted by an extracting means 6 and stored. By a means 7 for making the extracted index word correspond with the page in which the word exists a page is matched with an index. Finally it is sorted by an editing means 8, and a sentence and an index are printed by a printing means 9.
