NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula [R<1> is lower alkyl; R<2> and R<3> are H, lower alkyl, benzyl, naphthyl, phenoxy, (halogen-substituted) phenyl, alkoxycarbonylalkyl, cyclohexylalkyl, or together form (lower alkyl-substituted) 4-6C cycloalkyl]. USE:Anti-inflammatory agent and antibacterial agent. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by (1) reacting the beta-substituted-alpha-mercaptopropenoic acid of formula II [e.g. beta-(4-methylphenyl)-alpha- mercaptopropenoic acid] with the acid halide of formula III (e.g. 3-phenylpropionyl chloride) in te presence of a base such as NaOH, and (2) reacting the resultant compound of formula IV [e.g. alpha-(3-phenyl-propionyl)thio-beta-(4-methyl- phenyl)propenoic acid] with thionyl chloride in DMF.
