A solar panel for use in a hostile environment consists of a number of solar cells sealed inside a moulded glass casing. The casing is formed in two sections. The top section has recesses shaped to receive the solar cells with only a little clearance and wonward extending sidewalls which fit over similar downward extending sidewalls on the bottom section again with a fine clearance. Spacers are positioned between the top and bottom sections. The interior of the casing is filled with a potting compound to cushion the cells and effect bonding and sealing together of the sections. 'Sealgard' (RTM) is partic. suitable for this purpose. Additional recesses are formed in the casing to accommodate the electrical connections for the cells. As well as providing protection for the cells from degrading substances, the panel surfaces are easily washed and cleaned, the glass does not degrade ultraviolet radiation but does reduce the amt. geeting through the degrade the potting compound. Unused infrared radiation is transmitted out of the bottom glass section so that the cells are cooler and more efficient. |
