NEW MATERIAL:The 2-substituted-6-(5-substituted-2-pyrimidinyl)naphthalene of formula I (R1 is 1-10C alkyl or alkoxy; R2 is cyano or 1-10C alkyl). EXAMPLE:2-Hepthyl-6-(5-ethyl-2-pyrimidinyl)naphthalene. USE:Useful as a component of liquid crystal composition. A small amount of the compound increases the DELTAn of a liquid crystal composition prepared by mixing various liquid crystal compounds such as those based on ester, Schiff's base, biphenyl, phenylcyclohexane, etc., and decreases the driving voltage of a liquid crystal display element containing said liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by reacting 6-substituted-2-naphthalenecarbonitrile of formula II with hydrogen chloride gas, reacting the product with ammonia gas, and reacting the resultant compound of formula III with the compound of formula IV.
