PURPOSE:To segment properly and completely a character pattern by tracking continuous black base constituting points in the entire character entry frame, specifying a pattern segmenting range in accordance with their respective coordinate data. CONSTITUTION:A character 15 and a character entry frame 16 are composed of a black base of pictures, and other background except them consists of a white base of pictures. An orthogonal coordinate sytem 17 consisting of X and Y coordinates is set in a frame memory 6. First the frame memory 6 is scanned and the coordinate position of black constituting points in the character entry frame 16 is detected. Continuous black base constituting points are tracked at the total circumference of the character entry frame 16, and the maximum and minimum coordinate data out of black base constituting points are detected in the orthogonal coordinate system 17. In accordance with these maximum and minimum coordinate data, a pattern feeding-out range of a broken line 17 is specified and a character pattern for one character is segmenting from the frame memory 6.
