8-(4-(2-pyrimidyl) 1-piperazinyl)butyl)8 -azaspiro (5,4) decan-7,9-dione is made by reaction of the potassium salt of cyclopentane 1,1-diacetic acid with 4-chloro butyraldehyde to give 4-(8-aza 7,9-dioxo-spiro(4,5) 8-decyl)butyraldehyde. This is condensed under reducing conditions with 1-(2-pyrimidyl) piperazine to form the required cpd. The inert solvent is pref. linear or cyclic aliphatic esters, esp. tetrahydrofurane. The reducing agent is pref. sodium cyanoborhydride with pH 3-5.
