An apparatus for painting or coating of lengths of paper (2) has a doctor head (3) which consists of a soft elastic buffer body (4) and a roller doctor bar (5) rotatably mounted on its front side. The buffer body (4) bears at the rear, adjustably via an adjusting device (8), against a doctor beam (6) or the like, and the doctor head (3) is held at the side of the sheet take-off by a rigid guide strip (7) of the doctor beam (8). In order to achieve a uniform, stripe-free coating, even at very high speeds of the length, it is provided according to the invention that the doctor head (3) is arranged in a corner groove (10), open forwards and to the side from which the length is supplied, of the doctor beam (8), and that the buffer body (4) has, on the side from which the length is supplied, a free side surface (13) in front of which a free displacement space (V) for the material of the buffer body (4) is provided. Furthermore, an application roller (18) is mounted near the length, in front of the doctor device (1) and in close proximity, and has a radius of about two to three times the width of the buffer body (4). <IMAGE>
