In the serial subtracter according to the subject-matter of the invention, the carry shift circuit 2 is not arranged in the output area of the fixed subtraction value circuit 1 and constructed as one-down shift circuit but is arranged in the subtrahend input area of the fixed subtraction value circuit 1 and is constructed as one-up shift circuit. In this serial subtracter, the carry from the previous subtraction is thus not subtracted from the result number of the following subtraction but added to the subtrahend of the following subtraction. If a new carry is produced during this process in the carry shift circuit 2 (one-up shift circuit 2), this is present at the input w of the carry memory 3 via the OR circuit 4. <IMAGE>
