PURPOSE:To obtain inexpensive optical fibers, consisting of a core and a clad, having a high strength, and suitable for submarine optical fibers and optical fibers for subscribers, etc., by drawing the core, forming a clad layer continuously thereon, and coating the clad layer with a resin. CONSTITUTION:A base material 3 produced by the usual core production method, e.g. vapor-phase axial deposition (VAD) or modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) method, is drawn into a fiber in fiber drawing furnaces 1 and 2 to prepare a core fiber 4, which is then coated with an organosilicon acid compound of the formula Si(OR)4 or Si(OC-OR)4 (R is alkyl or aryl) in a die 5 and baked in a baking furnace 6 to form a clad layer consisting of SiO2 and prepare an optical fiber 7 consisting of the core and clad, which is then coated with a resin in a resin coating die 8 and baked in a baking furnace 9. Thus, the aimed optical fiber 10 coated with the resin is obtained. |
