Wood chips and garden waste rot down more easily when they are finely comminuted. The object of the invention is a comminution of such wastes to fine chips or meal. This object is achieved according to the invention in that materials comminuted in a first stage undergo an after-comminution in a second stage arranged on the same shaft; the material passes through an axial, helical preparation path.
