In a machine vision system the objects of interest 1a, 1b, 1c are illuminated in turn by frequency swept ultrasonic stress wave energy from a transmitting and receiving transducer array 4 and by light from a source 5. Reflected signals are received respectively by the array 4 and camera 6; respective images are fed to a processor 9 in which the data is analysed to make use of the best data derived from both sources of illumination and the resulting data are compared with reference data for object recognition purposes to provide stimuli controlling an object reject device. <IMAGE> |
