The power flow from the engine (10) is divided by a longitudinal differential (16) between the front axle (22L, 22R) with its transverse differential (21) and the rear axle (28L, 28R) with its transverse differential (26). The longitudinal differential (16) has a non-unity transmission ratio G between the parts thereof coupled to the two axes, such that, at least approximately. RF IF = G RR IR where RF and RR are the radii of the front and rear wheels respectively, and IF and IR are the reduction ratios from the longitudinal differential to the front and rear wheel respectively. The longitudinal differential (16) is advantageously an epicyclic gear with its planet carrier (34) coupled to the engine (10) and its sun wheel (36) and annulus (37) coupled to the front transmission shaft (17) and rear transmission shaft (18) respectively. The vehicle has individual rear wheel brakes (30L, 30R) and a single front wheel brake (32) acting on the front transmission shaft (17). These brakes may be controlled in parallel or individually to take account of various slip conditions. |
