PURPOSE:To output a pattern in a short time without performing longitudinal/ lateral conversion every time the pattern is outputted by reading data out of a character generator right after a power source is turned on and performing the longitudinal/lateral conversion, and storing the converted data in read/write memory. CONSTITUTION:A character generator CG1 is equipped with ROM stored with longitudinal character pattern data previously, and a character generator CG2 is equipped with RAM wherein data are writable. One output line of an I/O port IOP is connected to the generators CG1 and CG2 as a bank select line. In this constitution, data is read out of the generator G1 right after the power source is turned on and converted from longitudinal to lateral direction, and the converted data is stored in the RAM. When a character pattern is outputted, data is read out of the RAM for a lateral character and data is outputted without longitudinal/lateral conversion.
