984,392. Fuel injection systems. GES. FUR LINDE'S EISMASCHINEN A.G. Jan. 23, 1963 [Jan. 24, 1962], No. 2810/63. Heading F1B. Fuel is fed under low pressure by a fuel pump and metering mechanism 18, 8, to an orifice in the transfer passage on the compression stroke, the fuel being carried by the air flow into a whirltype combustion chamber 4 where the fuel droplets are centrifuged on to the chamber wall from which they subsequently evaporate. The pumping and metering mechanism comprises a gear feed pump 18 supplying an engine driven rotary distributer 12 feeding the fuel delivery passages 7-11 of respective cylinders. A metering valve 16 and excess pressure valve 17 are provided in the pump outlet pipe 15. The time of injection may be varied by angular adjustment of the distributer casing or by adjustment of a coupling in the distributer valve drive and the amount of fuel injected may be varied by axial movement of the valve 12 relative to triangular shaped delivery ports in the casing 8. Automatic control of the distributer by a governor may be associated with an override manual control. A reciprocating pump delivering at low pressure may alternatively be used. |
