PURPOSE:To measure accurately the width of a coal chamber at a high-temperature, by operating a potentiometer provided within an insulated chamber with a displacement member to be abutted against the wall of the coal chamber. CONSTITUTION:A potentiometer 37 is provided within a chamber 8a receiving a main body 8 which is surrounded by a heat insulating wall (numeral 11 being a heat insulator) and cooled by air which is introduced through an inner tube 22, passed in the direction of the arrow and discharged through an outer tube 23. A displacement member 14 which is energized outward by a spring 35 is provided through the through-hole 13 of the side wall 8b of the main body 8. The member 14 is connected through a rack 36 and a gear 38 to the potentiometer 37. The main body 8 and a main body 9 having a similar structure to that of the main body 8 are fixed through a rail 7 to the tip of the beam 5 of a pusher and inserted into the coal chamber of a coke oven 1. A roller 15 provided at the tip of the member 14 is abutted against the surface of the side wall 2a and the width of the carbon chamber is determined from the resulting turning angle theta of the potentiometer 37 (similarly carried out for the main body 9).
