PURPOSE:To improve the quality of produced coke and that of concomitantly formed coal tar and to increase the yields of useful light oil, by adding a retarder to coal fed in a coke oven and carrying out dry distillation. CONSTITUTION:In the production of coke and other products by the dry distillation of coal, 0.005-1wt% retarder is added to coal fed in a coke oven. In the dry distillation of coal, the retarder inhibits radical reaction, increasing the aromaticity of concomitantly formed coal tar and increasing the yields of light oil such as benzene, toluene, xylene, etc. Examples of the retarders are sec. arom. amines such as phenylnaphthylamine, hydrogen-donating alicyclic compds. such as decalin and phenols such as hydroquinone.
