Reed switch in mercury-filled glass envelope - has magnetisable bushes contg. springs with platinum contacts on overlapping partly non-wettable ends

The switch comprises a mercury-filled glass envelope (1) contg. two leaf springs (3) of magnetisable material inside axially spaced bushes (2) of similar material. The ends (4) of the springs project into the space between the bushes and overlap one another. The extreme ends of the springs are coated with e.g. Cr-oxide to prevent adhesion of mercury and platinum contacts (5) on the ends are treated to ensure effective mercury wettings. - Contact is made between the contacts (5) and the non-coated spring end portions when the magnetic force applied overcomes the spring force. The ends of the bushes carry damper elements (7) to arrest the ends of the springs when contact is broken.
