PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for a rust preventive in high yield, by using a Co compound catalyst and a specific reaction promotor in a liquid phase, oxidizing methyl of an aromatic compound containing a methyl group an a specific substituent group with O2 at a specified rate. CONSTITUTION:A methyl group of an aromatic compound such as p-(1-methylheptyl)toluene, etc. containing a methyl group and single 6-30C straight-chain or branched chain aliphatic group of alkyl group, or terminal carboxyl group or terminal alkoxycarbonyl group as substituent groups of aromatic nucleus is oxidized with molecular oxygen at 80-140 deg.C in a liquid phase in the presence of a Co compound catalyst by the use of one or more selected from para-aldehyde, methyl ethyl kitone, 2-4C saturated aldehyde as a reaction promotor with feeding 0.005-0.5mol/hr reaction promotor per l reaction solution, to give a corresponding aromatic mono-, di- or polycarboxylic acid.
