PURPOSE:To reduce transmission loss and to improve mechanical strength by welding >=2 core clad type optical fibers where part or the whole of clads are removed and thus forming an optical coupling part, and forming a clad glass layer at the coupling part. CONSTITUTION:Optical fibers 1 and 2 having clads removed are welded to form the optical coupling part 7, so a coupler having high coupling efficiency is obtained. Further, the glass clad layer 8 is formed on the optical coupling part 7 by dissolving metallic alcoholate, so glass having the same refractive index with clads 5 and 6 is formed thickly on the photocoupling part 7. This glass clad layer 8 functions as a clad and there is no leak of light from this part, so that an increase in transmission loss is prevented. Mechanical characteristics and airtightness are increased by providing a coating layer 9. |
