Municipal waste waters are biologically purified with live mud in a two-step process by first homogenising the water to stop any anaerobic decompsn. and in each step aerating it by pumping it through the communicating chambers of the aerator, sepg. the mud by settling, feeding the sepd. mud to the same or the other aerating step, or removing the excess mud, and opt. sterilising the purified water. - At least one of the aerators consists of communicating chambers sepd. by walls, the walls have communicating orifices, each chamber is fitted with known porous air intake devices.
