PURPOSE:To make dictionary forming work efficient and to improve the accuracy of a dictionary by previously setting up essential character features common to respective deformed formats of a character and forming the dictionary mechanically by a computer circuit. CONSTITUTION:In this invension, the essential character features common to respective deformed formats of a character are previously set up and the feature code of each deformed format is automatically edited on the basis of the set data to form a dictionary 8. In case of a ''kana'' (Japanese syllabary) character shown in figures A and B for example, there is no loop and left recess on both deformed formats A, B and relating bits are fixed on ''0'' by regarding these features are essential. While reading/writing data from/in RAMs 11-13 on the basis of a program stored in a program memory 10, a CPU9 executes dictionary formation. A table 14 expressing essential the character features common to respective deformed formats of the character as data in each character is set up in the RAM11. The RAM13 extracts the feature code including the data constitution of the set data and edits the dictionary 8.
