PURPOSE:To obtain a polyvinyl ester capable of manufacturing polyvinyl alcohol of both low syndiotacticity and crystallinity with its aqueous solution high in stability when left to stand, by polymerizing a vinyl ester in a sulforane compound as medium solvent. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyvinyl ester can be obtained by polymerizing a vinyl ester such as vinyl acetate pref. at 0-150 deg.C to such a point as to be 300- 5,000 in the final polymerization degree, using, as medium solvent, e.g. a sulforane compound of formula I , II or III in such an amount as to be 10-90wt% based on the total weight of the vinyl ester and sulforane compound. USE:While said polyvinyl ester itself can be used as a resin modifier or additive, the polyvinyl alcohol obtained by saponification of this ester is improved in terms of its crystallinity etc., thus being useful as paste, adhesive, etc.
