In order to monitor the level of the bath 2 of molten steel inside a tundish 1 intended to feed continuous-casting ingot moulds 4, without being impeded by the protective slag layer 8, of variable thickness, which floats on this bath, a dip tube 9, for example made from quartz, is disposed inside 1, it being arranged that the surface of the liquid metal is uncovered in this tube, then, with the aid of an apparatus 10, a luminous or radio electromagnetic radiation is sent into 9, this radiation being reflected by the said surface, and the distance between the latter and the apparatus 10 is measured by application of known devices, based either on the outward and return travel time of the beam or on the phase shift which appears at 10 between the emitted radiation and the reflected radiation. <IMAGE>
